WHAT TO DO IN PUERTO MONTT
Puerto Montt Tour
In Puerto Montt’s charming main square is the city’s oldest building built in 1856, the Iglesia Catedral. It is made entirely out of alerce, the wood of a Chilean evergreen tree. Gain some ground at the Mirador offering a fabulous view of the Reloncaví Cove and the city.
You can’t visit Puerto Montt without spending time in Puerto Varas, the Chile vacation paradise. This is a friendly welcoming town with superb views of Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes on the other side of Llanquihue Lake.
Chiloe Island
Chiloe Island is a lush, mystical archipelago rich in cultural history, having escaped a great deal of the colonial onslaught and progressive transformations of Santiago. Geographically this island is ripe with verdant hills quilted in farm patterns to the north, and blanketed in dense forest to the south.
Chiloe Island is easily accessible by a ferry from Pargua, taking about half an hour to cross the Chacao channel. To get a grasp on the island’s ethnic history and enticing mythology there is a museum in Ancud not far from where the ferry drops you off called the Museo Azul de las Islas de Chiloé or Blue Museum of the Islands of Chiloe.
Osorno Volcano & Vicente Perez Rosales Nacional Park
Just 30 miles (50 km) from Puerto Varas is Chile’s oldest national park, the Vicente Perez Rosales. With a stunning landscape of trees, mountains and snowy volcanoes, its wealth of wildlife is also incredibly rich, amounting to more than one hundred species of birds and 30 species of mammals. Together with the marvelous natural beauty of the Osorno Volcano, the Todos Los Santos lake, the Petrohué Waterfalls, the Negro River and the Tronador Volcano amongst many others, this park is an important destination on your Chile vacation.
When To Visit Puerto Montt
Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas is where Patagonia really starts, so the preferred travel season is from October through March for clear skies. Weather changes rapidly so you are likely to see some sun each day even during the rainy season.
