Spewing geysers, green lagoons and Chile’s largest salt flat, are all within easy access of the village and desert outpost of Atacama. A precordillera oasis village, San Pedro de Atacama has a local population of about 1000. Set amidst the harsh, lonesome beauty of the Atacama Desert, San Pedro boasts unique geological formations within biking distance, and is the starting point for longer excursions to the high plains discovering unique wildlife, and the Tatio Geysers.
“In this exceptional scenery, beautiful in its vast and desolate space, travelers find it difficult to leave once they are here. In its very center, the Atacama Desert claims to be the driest place on Earth and offers a rare pristine beauty that is unmatched anywhere else in the world.”
The central area is so dry that objects remain fossilized for centuries. Far from lacking in culturally enticing landmarks, the hand of primitive man can be seen in the giant petroglyphs, which cover the slopes of the hills. Water dripping from thawing snow in the mountains has allowed small settlements to survive and maintain their traditional customs as if suspended in time.
Thanks for putting together a great itinerary. I had a fabulous time. Buenos Aires, Mendoza and Santiago de Chile each were exciting and interesting in their own way and greatly exceeded my expectations!.

We are back in Malta! We would like to thank you and your team for a most enjoyable vacation. Considering the many countries (Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil) we visited, and the 14 flights we took, all went well.
Oliver, Malta.
Our trip was incredibly successful in three different countries: Chile, Brazil and Peru. And in every instance, the coordination of details and execution were impeccably accurate regardless of the country visited. Success at every stage was achieved regardless of location, the weather, the country and/or the time of day or night we traveled and were sight-seeing.

Laguna Verde
Across the Bolivian border, about 40 miles from San Pedro de Atacama, is the Green Lagoon, an enchanting, emerald (due to a high concentration of magnesium), 10-square-mile body of water. Like an immense green mirror, the lagoon throws off a reflection of the Licancabur Volcano, which rises almost 19,000 feet above sea level. This makes for a magical setting and may be the reason why the area was considered sacred by the pre-Columbian inhabitants of the territory.
Tatio Geysers
About 50 miles (82 km) over a difficult road are the geysers at El Tatio, the highest in the world. The Tatio geysers, one of the desert's most awe-inspiring "son et lumiere" spectacles, are located fairly close to San Pedro de Atacama. At dawn, the vapor from dozens of fumaroles springing up from the mineral heart of the desert decomposes into thousands of colors and fantastic images. The best time to see El Tatio is at dawn, so tours leave San Pedro around 03:00 AM.
Valley of the Moon
In an impressive contrast, sunset in the Valley of the Moon is the maximum expression of silence, solace and aridness. For thousands of years the wind has carved strange, desolate, stone shapes in the valley and, in the diaphanous atmosphere of the altiplano, these stand out sharply against the startlingly blue sky.
Atacama Salt Lake
Both the Meñique and Miscanti are fed from water sources far below the surface of the earth, and both attract an array of wildlife, like an abundance of flamingos whose pink figures, a stark contrast to the surrounding snowy slopes, are brilliantly reflected in the waters. Another lagoon at Chaxas is famous for the three varieties of flamingos and other birds that nest here. This is the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos. From here, it is possible to reach the Salar de Atacama, a huge lake hidden under a thick white mantle of salt (the largest salt flat in Chile).
When To Visit Atacama
San Pedro de Atacama can be visited year-round. In the higher elevations bordering the Andes it can get cloudy and colder during winter time, so the best time to visit is in the warmer months, between September and February.
